PREVENTION

Proactive strategies and early interventions to reduce your risk and protect your quality of life.

I am proud to be able to offer a specialised service to help to reduce the risk of cancer related Lympoedema, using the latest research and technology.

Research supports early lymphoedema surveillance for those going through treatment for breast cancer, melanoma and pelvic cancers. These cancers carry the highest risk of lymphoedema after surgery, radiation and some chemotherapies.

It is possible to detect signs of lymphoedema before there is a visible change to the affected limb. Within assessment, I utilise SOZO bioimpedance Spectroscopy, which detects small changes in fluid, giving a score called 'L-Dex' or Lymphoedema Index.

Lymphoedema Surveillance and Early Intervention Program includes:
- Pre-Operative assessment to record baseline L-Dex measure and circumference measures, assessment of function and Lymphoedema prevention education. I offer a Gap-Free pre-op visit for those who hold Physiotherapy extras.
- Post-Operative assessment at 3-4 weeks, or once drain tubes are out. Range of movement and issues such as Axillary cording are addressed at this appointment.
- 3 monthly reviews over the first 2 years post-op, and 6 monthly thereafter.- Intervention with manual therapy and exercise based rehab were appropriate.
- Compression prescription if subclinical lymphoedema is detected.

It is strongly recommended for those who are due to have surgery for breast cancer, melanoma and pelvic cancers, to commence Lymphoedema Prevention as early as possible after diagnosis.

MANAGEMENT

Expert care to ease symptoms, improve mobility, and empower long-term self-management.

Effective management is key to maintaining strength, mobility, and quality of life after a cancer diagnosis or lymphoedema development.

I offer a tailored, ongoing support to help patients manage symptoms, prevent setbacks, and stay in control of their health. Whether they’re navigating post-treatment recovery or living with a long-term condition.

Management may include:
- Personalised exercise programs to maintain strength, endurance, and mobility.
- Ongoing lymphoedema monitoring using SOZO bioimpedance spectroscopy for early detection of fluid changes.
- Hands-on therapy to address pain, discomfort, and functional issues as they arise.
- Emotional and physical support to manage fatigue, anxiety, and overall wellbeing.
- Regular reassessments to adjust care plans, track progress, and set new goals.

This approach combines rehabilitation principles with prevention strategies, supporting patients to live well, stay active, and feel empowered long after their initial treatment ends.

REHABILITATION

Comprehensive support to help you regain strength and confidence after cancer treatment.

I am a certified PINC cancer rehabilitation physiotherapist. I work with patients right from cancer diagnosis, throughout active cancer treatment, post surgery, as well as those who have been cancer free for many years.

Cancer rehabilitation can prevent short term and long term disability for those diagnosed with cancer. It may involve hands on therapies and exercise based treatment and education.

Furthermore, there is strong evidence to support that those with a cancer diagnosis who participate in regular exercise, especially supervised exercise, have a lower relative risk of cancer recurring, as well as having fewer side effects from their cancer treatments.

Exceptional benefits of physiotherapy lead Cancer rehabilitation include:
- Regaining and maintaining strength, mobility and endurance
- Increasing tolerance to chemotherapy, radiation and hormone therapies
- Reducing cancer related fatigue
- Managing stress, anxiety and depression
- Managing pain
- Improving wellbeing

In depth assessment and goal setting is initially performed to create a specially designed treatment plan and exercise program. I am lucky to have access to exercise facilities and to be able to utilise a range of equipment, including the Pilates reformer.
